Bembridge Airfield is an unlicensed airfield managed by the Vectis Gliding Club Ltd (VGC). The main runway is orientated 300/120 degrees, and consists of some 827 x 12 metres of concrete. There is also a grass strip 230/050.
VGCconducts gliding operations on Wednesdays (BST), Saturdays, Sundays and Bank holidays weather permitting, however gliding operations may take place on any day. There are also a number of resident power aircraft, and model flying at any time to the North side of the 23 grass runway up to 500 feet agl.
Gliders are launched by aerotow behind a Piper Super Cub aircraft call sign Tug. Gliders may be launched either from the concrete runway or from the grass to the South of the runway. VGC may also use 23 grass in some conditions. Bembridge Radio will advise on the traffic situation.
Visiting aircraft are welcome however Prior Permission is required (PPR) for any aircraft to land at Bembridge Mondays to Fridays, or at times outside of the operating hours of Bembridge Radio. This may be obtained by telephoning the number given below. Landing will be both at the discretion and risk of the visiting pilot.
Bembridge Radio operating hours are between the hours of 0930 and 1530 local on Saturdays; Sundays and Public Holidays. Prior Permission to land during operating hours is no longer required.
Visiting aircraft should be aware that the glider circuit is to the south of the concrete runway, and will either be 30 Left or 12 Right as appropriate. Overhead or dead side joins are therefore not permitted. Power traffic should use the North side of the airfield for circuits, these being 30 Right or 12 Left as appropriate.
Visitors are requested to avoid over flying Bembridge village particularly when climbing out on 12
The VGC provides an Air/Ground radio service on 123.250 (call sign Bembridge Radio) between the hours of 0930 and 1630 local on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays. Winter hours of 10.00 to 1530 are operated whilst the clocks are on GMT. The service is not normally manned outside of these hours, or on weekdays unless a special arrangement has been made, at the request of the visitor when obtaining prior permission.
The Designated Operational Coverage (DOC) of this service is 10 Nautical Miles from the site and 3000 feet in height. Visitors are requested not to call Bembridge Radio until inside the Operational Coverage.
Visiting aircraft are advised to join either at 1500 feet on the runway centre line (QDM) or down wind on the North side. On days when Bembridge Radio is not operational then blind radio calls should be made to Bembridge Traffic on frequency 123.250 for safety purposes.
If VGC are operating then Bembridge Radio will respond with airfield information.
If VGC are not operating then no response will be forthcoming; however, no response should NOT be taken as confirmation that no gliding is taking place, as motor gliders may be operating without ground support.
Visiting power pilots should park their aircraft on the North side of the field.
Fuel is not available at Bembridge.
Proximity of Sandown Airfield
Sandown airfield is an active unlicensed airfield with a grass runway orientated 23/05 situated 3 miles to the South West of Bembridge.
Historically when both fields were licensed the ATZ of both extended one and a half miles towards each other. The demarcation line roughly runs from the canoe lake on the coast North through the cross roads at Brading village. Although neither airfield now has an ATZ it is recommended that aircraft continue to observe the former boundaries for safety reasons.
In some weather conditions (primarily North winds) traffic departing Sandown on 05, and traffic departing 30 at Bembridge are on a converging course.
All pilots are therefore strongly advised to execute a turn to the North away from Sandown, when departing Bembridge to minimise any potential compromise or risk.
Tug and Glider combinations execute a left turn (to the South) on departure from 30 grass runway, prior to reaching the imaginary boundary line as described above.
Visiting pilots should visit the Bembridge Radio Control Point (Indicated by the large black letter C on a yellow background) on the south side of the main runway for payment of landing fees, or if the control is not available (out of hours)then please deposit landing fees in the VGC letter box adjacent to the Propeller Public House. Care should be taken when walking from the aircraft parking area â€“ please stick to the hedge and keep a lookout for landing gliders, and tugs with tow ropes attached. Please do not walk across the runway.!
